How we choose products

Some Dermlore guides show a few product examples next to the advice. Here is how those examples are chosen, what they are not, and how we earn from them.

At a glance
  • Criteria come first; products are examples that meet them, not a ranking.
  • We read labels and ingredient lists. We have not hands-on tested these products.
  • We earn a commission on some links. It never decides what we show.

What a product example is

A product example is a widely available product whose label meets the criteria described in the guide — for example “fragrance-free, lists ceramides” for a barrier moisturizer, or “broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher, mineral filters only” for a sensitive-skin sunscreen. It shows what a product that meets those criteria looks like. It is not a “best” list or a treatment recommendation for any individual.

How we choose

  1. 1
Criteria firstThe guide defines what to look for on the label before any product is named. Products that do not meet those criteria are not shown.
  2. 2
Label and ingredient listWe read the current ingredient list and claims on the brand’s or retailer’s listing and record the date we checked. Products whose labels conflict with the criteria — for example essential oils in a product described as fragrance-free — are rejected.
  3. 3
Independent marks, never invented ratingsWhen a product carries a recognised third-party mark, such as the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance, we say so. We do not show star ratings or scores.
  4. 4
A small, grouped choiceTwo or three options, grouped by texture, skin type or use — for example “lighter option for the face” — rather than numbered from best to worst.
  5. 5
Reliable sellersWe prefer listings sold by the brand or by the retailer itself, to reduce the risk of counterfeit skin care.

What we do not do

  • We have not lab-tested or hands-on tested these products, and we do not claim to.
  • We do not show prices or star ratings; they change and we cannot keep them accurate.
  • We do not accept payment, free products or sponsorship to include a product.
  • We do not put product links on pages about prescription medicines or conditions that need a clinician’s assessment.
  • A product example never replaces advice from a dermatologist or pharmacist — especially if your skin stings, burns or develops a rash.

How we earn

Dermlore participates in the Amazon Associates program. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. If you buy through a product link, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Commission rates never decide which products are shown or what a guide says. Affiliate links are labelled and marked as sponsored.

Keeping examples current

We re-check product labels at least every three months and whenever a listing changes. If a formula no longer meets the guide’s criteria, we remove it. If you spot an outdated example, please tell us through the contact page.
